Preparing Your Files

Adobe Illustrator™

Illustrator is a common package for vector-based designs, but is an excellent resource for combining bitmapped images with vector-based text and artwork.

Get Started Right

Unlike Photoshop, when creating a new file in Illustrator, be sure to be working in CMYK Color mode (instead of RGB). This allows immediate access to the CMYK color palette for your designs.

Converting Text to Outlines

Once you have completed your layout and are ready to go to print, you need to do something about your fonts. Illustrator has the advantage of being able to convert fonts to vector artwork, which preserves the shape and placement and also doesn't require font files.

To convert your fonts, select all of your text so it is highlighted, then select Create Outlines from the Type pull-down menu.

Saving Illustrator Files for Print

Choose Save As from the File pull-down menu. In the Save As pop-up window, select Illustrator EPS (EPS) as your format. This file format preserves both bitmapped and vector images and is best for print.
