Preparing Your Files

Adobe InDesign™

InDesign is a popular application for doing desktop publishing and page layout. And, it is highly compatible with Photoshop and Illustrator.

Get Started Right

When creating a new file in, it is good practice to set your document width and height to be the final output size. For example, a letterhead would be set to have a width of 8.5 inches with a height of 11 inches.

Converting Text to Outlines

Once you have completed your layout and are ready to go to print, you need to do something about your fonts. InDesign has the advantage of being able to convert fonts to vector artwork, which preserves the shape and placement and also doesn't require font files.

To convert your fonts, select all of your text so it is highlighted, then select Create Outlines from the Type pull-down menu.

Color mode to print

Be sure you are working in CMYK color mode if you are using a four-color process for printing. This step is located on the Color Palette. Select the right arrow pull-down menu, scroll down and select CMYK.
